Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of getting your website to appear in front of search engines when people use keyword phrases that are relevant to what you're offering. It's not a black art - it can be learned and implemented with a little help from the right tools. In this article I'll walk you through some basic tips for SEO that will get you started.

In order to optimize your website for search engines, you need to do the following things:

1) Publish Relevant, Authoritative Content. This means writing articles about topics that are relevant to your business or niche. There should also be links to other related content on your website, such as white papers and case studies. When people go to your site, they expect to find good information that answers their questions and provides solutions to problems. If they don't find what they're looking for, they will leave immediately.

2) Update Your Content Regularly. Search engines love fresh content so if your articles aren't updated regularly, then you have no idea how many times people will visit them. They may even consider your site "stale" and remove it from listings entirely. Keep your articles up to date by adding new ones and editing old ones so that they include keywords.

3) Make sure all pages on your website have unique titles. For example, if you want to rank highly for "how to make money online," then you could title one page "How To Become A Millionaire Online" and another page "How To Make Money Online." You don't want a person searching for "online millionaire" to see both pages because they'll assume there's only one way to become rich online.

4) Create a sitemap. A sitemap is an XML file that contains a list of every single page on your website. Sitemaps tell search engines where everything on your site is located. The more organized you are, the better.

5) Include descriptive headers and alt text. Headers are the words that come before the actual content of the page. Alt text is similar but describes the images on the page instead of the page itself. Descriptive headings and alt text are important because they improve usability. If someone clicks on a picture, they'll know exactly what image they're looking at.

6) Use keywords. Keywords are the specific terms that people type into Google or Yahoo! to find something. These are the words that Google uses to decide which websites to display in its search results. So if you want Google to put your website in the top 10 results, you need to use keywords that are associated with your industry. Also include popular keywords in blog posts that you create.

7) Make sure your site is link-worthy. This means having quality backlinks pointing to your site. Links are the foundation of search engine rankings. Google relies heavily on the number and quality of these links to determine the relevancy of your site. However, Google doesn't trust any one source. In other words, if you have 100 sites linking to yours, Google still won't trust any individual one. So in order to get high rankings, you need to build relationships with reputable sites.

8) Get social. Share your content on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Digg, StumbleUpon, etc. Social bookmarking sites give your site more exposure than just creating a blog post. People who read your blog, like it, share it, and comment on it are likely to share it on their own social networks. Plus, sharing content on social media makes it easier for people to find you when they are using those services.

9) Don't spam. Spamming means posting the same article several times on different blogs or forums. This isn't going to work in the long run. Instead, try to create original content that's worth sharing.

10) Set up Analytics. Analytics allow you to track the visitors to your site and the activities that take place while they're there. This is extremely valuable in determining what works and what doesn't. Use a free tool like Google Analytics to get started.

If you follow these guidelines your site should start ranking well in search engines within the first month. As always, patience is key. Take time to learn the ropes and develop your strategy. Good luck!
